Job Description

Grade 1 Teacher – Maternity Leave

This is a full-time temporary teaching position beginning November 2nd, 2026 and continuing until June 18th 2026, with the possibility of an extension through to December 17th, 2027.

The successful candidate will:

  • Create a warm, engaging, and Christ-centred classroom environment.

  • Provide effective instruction and assessment appropriate for Grade 1 students.

  • Integrate a Biblical worldview throughout the curriculum and daily classroom life.

  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Support students' academic, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development.

  • Plan and deliver lessons aligned with the provincial curriculum and school learning goals.

  • Maintain effective classroom routines and a positive learning environment.
    Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and caregivers.

  • Participate in school activities, chapel, professional development, and the broader life of the VCA community.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and support staff to meet the needs of students.


Job Requirements

  • Hold, or be eligible to obtain, a valid Saskatchewan 'Professional A' teaching certificate.

  • Have a Bachelor of Education or equivalent teaching qualification.

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to following Jesus Christ and a desire to integrate a Biblical worldview into student learning.

  • Be committed to the mission and values of Valley Christian Academy.

  • Demonstrate strong classroom management and instructional skills.

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate a genuine love for children and a passion for elementary education.

  • Be willing to work collaboratively as part of a close-knit school community.

  • Experience teaching in the primary grades would be an asset.

Position Overview

Valley Christian Academy is seeking a caring, relational, and Christ-centred School Counsellor to support the social, emotional, and personal wellbeing of our students.

The School Counsellor will work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, administration, and outside professionals to provide appropriate support and help students navigate the challenges they may encounter throughout their school years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group counselling and support to students.

  • Support students experiencing social, emotional, behavioural, academic, or personal challenges.

  • Develop positive, trusting, and appropriate relationships with students.
    Collaborate with teachers and administration to identify student needs and develop appropriate supports.

  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and guardians as appropriate.

  • Help students develop healthy coping strategies, resilience, self-awareness, problem-solving skills, and positive relationships.

  • Support students experiencing challenges such as anxiety, grief, peer conflict, family difficulties, or significant life transitions.

  • Provide support to students, staff, and the school community in navigating traumatic events, crises, and other significant incidents.

  • Work collaboratively with administration and appropriate professionals to support students following traumatic or critical incidents

  • Make appropriate referrals to outside professionals and community resources when needs extend beyond the scope of school-based counselling.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality in accordance with professional and school standards.

  • Participate in student support meetings and contribute to individualized support plans when appropriate.

  • Contribute to a safe, caring, and supportive school environment.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administration, and other members of the student support team.

  • Integrate a Christian worldview into counselling practice consistent with the mission and values of Valley Christian Academy.

  • Support the spiritual, social, emotional, and overall development of students.


Job Requirements

Qualifications & Attributes

The successful candidate will ideally possess:

  • A relevant degree or training in counselling, psychology, social work, education, or a related field.

  • Experience working with children and adolescents.

  • Previous counselling or student-support experience, preferably in a school setting.

  • Experience supporting children and families through trauma, grief, crisis, or significant life events.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Excellent relational and listening skills.

  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a school team.

  • A genuine passion for supporting the wellbeing and development of young people.

  • Knowledge of the Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) protocol would be considered an asset.

  • A committed Christian faith and a willingness to support and uphold the mission, vision, values, and Statement of Faith of Valley Christian Academy.
