Position Profile
The Director of Student Support plays a key leadership role in supporting inclusive education across the school. This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, and implementing programs that address the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students requiring additional support. Working collaboratively with teachers, educational assistants, families, and external professionals, the Director of Student Support ensures that individualized strategies and interventions are in place to help each student thrive. This role also provides guidance and professional development to staff in areas such as differentiated instruction, classroom accommodations, and student well-being, fostering a school culture that prioritizes equity, compassion, and holistic development. The Director of Student Support will be a collaborative member of the KCA Leadership Team, working closely with Teachers, Educational Assistants and Admissions.
In addition, the Director of Student Support contributes to the school’s mission of discipleship by helping shape an environment where students are nurtured not only as learners, but as followers of Jesus. Through intentional support and Christ-centered care, this role encourages students to grow in character, purpose, and spiritual maturity—ensuring that every child is seen, valued, and empowered to live out their God-given potential.
The Director of Student Support will be a supportive member that at all times works to support the overall ministry of KCA and its Vision and Mission:

Relationships
The Director of Student Support is directly accountable to the Principal. The Director of Student Support will meet regularly with the Principal, Leadership Team and Admissions and Student Records Coordinator to assess needs and determine priorities. The Director of Student Support will work closely with the Principal in setting budget and allocating resources. They will serve as a member of the Leadership Team and maintain cooperative relationships with all KCA staff, including teachers and EAs.
The Director of Student Support will have oversight of the Student Services Coordinator and the educational assistants group of staff. Hiring, evaluations, scheduling, training and HR matters involving these positions are under the direction of the Director of Student Support.
Specific Responsibilities
Support students at KCA with learning challenges and/or social-emotional needs through the following:
Assessment & Planning
Conduct educational assessments to identify learning challenges and academic needs.
Develop and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and support plans in collaboration with the Student Services Team.
Design and implement behavioral intervention plans tailored to individual student profiles.
Manage multiple tasks, coordinate services, and maintain accurate records
Instruction & Intervention
Identify issues and implement tailored solutions for individual student
Provide targeted remedial instruction to students individually and in small groups.
Apply and noodle differentiated teaching strategies and modify curriculum to meet diverse learning needs.
Utilize evidence-based interventions to support skill development and academic progress.
Collaboration & Coordination
Supporting roles and responsibilities of teachers, education assistants, student services staff, parents and principals as specified in the Ministry of Education, Special Education
Policies, Procedures and Guidelines Manual.
Consult with teachers to optimize classroom strategies and allocate resources for students with disabilities.Coordinate external services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy for students with identified needs.
Organize follow-up interventions based on external assessments to ensure continuity of care
Facilitate team-based meetings and collaborative planning sessions with staff under your control
Communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and external partners
Leadership & Professional Development
Supervise Educational Assistants to ensure effective support and implementation of student plans
Lead professional development for staff on topics including but not limited to special education, differentiated instruction, and inclusive classroom practices
Work to develop knowledge of instructional methods and interventions for students with learning differences
Resource Management
Maintain the Student Services Resource Center, including:
Specialized instructional materials
Adaptive equipment and technologies
Learning tools and reference materials
Job Requirements
Qualifications
The Director of Student Support must hold a British Columbia Teaching Certificate.
A Diploma or Certification in Special Needs or confirmed evidence of working toward Diploma or Certification in Special Needs or Certification or training in specific learning intervention programs (e.g., Orton-Gillingham, FAST, Leaps and Bounds, etc.) is an asset.
To successfully respond to the challenges of the role the Director of Student Support should represent as many as possible of the below mentioned characteristics:
Professional
Masters Degree and significant course work in and experience in Special Education preferred
Successful teaching experience with children with special needs Authorized to hold a Teaching Certificate in the Province of British Columbia
Proficient in assessment and testing theory and practice, including the administration of standardized assessments, informal evaluations and progress monitoring tools
Ability to collaborate with staff, parents and students
Strong organizational and management skills
Proficient in record-keeping and reporting
Ability to be self motivated to achieve objectives
Maintain a high level of confidentiality
Current First Aid certification beyond the basic level to respond effectively to medical emergencies, particularly for students with profound medical needs, and assisting in running the first aid room will be an asset.
