Job Description

Position Title: EAL Teacher for Newcomers

Freedom International School (FIS) is a registered charity in the heart of Winnipeg’s West End serving newcomer and former refugee youth, ages 12-23, providing differentiated, trauma-informed, accredited high school education in a Christ-centred environment.

We are a small, close-knit Christian school whose students come from a variety of backgrounds - all of them require language instruction as well as instruction in the subject area curriculum.  Working at our school tends to be rewarding, frustrating, changeable, and fun - often in the same hour! We are a community of Jesus-followers seeking to make a difference!

Overview: Our school is currently seeking a full-time EAL teacher to work with junior high and high school students who are newcomers to Winnipeg. As a trauma-informed teacher, you will be responsible for creating a safe and supportive learning environment for your students, caring for the whole student.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and implement engaging lesson plans in the core subjects and practical arts that align with the Manitoba curriculum and meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with different learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.

  • Integrate trauma-informed practices into teaching and create a safe and supportive classroom environment.

  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to newcomer EAL students to help them adjust to their new environment and succeed academically.

  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to develop and implement strategies to support newcomer EAL students and promote their well-being.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, and behaviour, and communicate regularly with parents/guardians and school administration.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices.

  • Participate in school-wide events and activities.

  • Participate in daily Assemblies and in weekly Chapels.

If you are passionate about teaching and supporting newcomer English language learners, and are committed to creating a safe and welcoming learning environment, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
